NOA Honor Mission

John Lodge Stoneman

US Army WWI Veteran

Kingston, NY - 11/07/2024

Mission applies to the following Region(s):

["Region 6"]

About the Mission:

The Wiltwyck Cemetery Superintendent has requested Patriot Guard Riders to participate in the funeral service for WWI Army Veteran John Lodge Stoneman. John’s story has recently resurfaced after more than six decades. Born in Detroit on April 18, 1895, John moved to New York at some point in his youth. He enlisted in the US Army on December 11, 1917 to fight in World War I. John served for two years and was honorably discharge on December 20, 1919.

After the war, John settled in West Hurley and lived quietly until his passing on September 6, 1962, at the age of 67.

His cremated remains were left unclaimed at a funeral home in Woodstock for more than 60 years. When that funeral home closed in 2023, Wiltwyck Cemetery Superintendent Matthew Sirni took possession of John’s remains. Cemetery volunteers took on the task of researching his history. His Certificate of Military Service—a document thought to be lost forever after a fire at the National Archives in St. Louis—was retrieved.

John Lodge Stoneman will be laid to rest with the dignity he deserves on Thursday, November 7, at 11 am.

A service will be held at the Ulster County Veterans Cemetery in New Paltz, where John will be honored with a full military tribute.

Patriot Guard Riders and the Ulster County Sheriff’s Department will provide an escort.

This narrative was obtained from the Wiltwyck Cemetery's newsletter.
