Region 3, Region 4, Region 5

About the Mission:

Patriot Guard Riders has been requested to participate in the military honors funeral for WW II "Greatest Generation" hero, US Marine Corps PFC Salvatore Famularo.

Sal was born in Amsterdam, NY. At the age of 18, just having graduated from high school and being the athletic sort, Sal enlisted in the US Marine Corps. Off he went to the prescribed USMC training regimens at Parris Island, SC - Camp Lejeune, NC - then on to Camp Pendleton, CA. He was assigned as a Rifleman and underwent all the necessary combat training that would keep him alive while fighting in the Pacific theatre of war.

As part of the Marine Corps 4th Division, he was sent out with his unit to the Mariana Islands. There, Sal participated in the amphibious landings of Saipan, Tinian and the fabled Iwo Jima. Sal and his fellow marines were under constant rifle and mortar in their effort to “take” these islands - and take them they did.

Sal’s combat experience at Iwo Jima ‘s “Amphitheater” ended when he was wounded by machine gun fire. As he lay, firing his weapon at the approaching Japanese, a USMC tank showed up and drove the Japanese away. Sal was pulled to safety up through the bottom of the tank.

Salvatore Famularo was sent home. Honorably discharged as a PFC and an awarded the Purple Heart for his wounds received in-action.

Sal returned home to marry and start his family. He was a well known and successful bartender in many of Albany and Schenectady’s finest establishments.
