About the Mission:
John M. Sweeney faithfully and honorably executed his duties to our nation in the US Navy from January 1958 until June 1962. An Ensign aboard the USS Edisto (AGB-2) a Wind-class Icebreaker, he was honorably discharged with great hearing loss.
The USS Edisto provided support to exploration in both Arctic and Antarctic. She supplied bases, reported ice packs and floes; took part in oceanographic, hydrographic, geological, coast and geodetic, and hydrophone surveys and Arctic convoy exercises.
From US Navy and related by family: Preparing to dock at Lyttelton, New Zealand, with no tugs and only one [of four] propellers working, the welcoming committee had to make a hasty retreat as she hit the wharf with considerable force.
Mr. Sweeney's family requests that Patriot Guard Riders stand for this American Hero.
