Honor Mission

Bernard J. Sweeney, Jr.

US Army
WW II KIA/MIA

Multi-City, NY - 10/06/2023

Mission applies to the following Region(s):

Region 8, Region 9

About the Mission:

Sgt. Bernard J Sweeney, 22 years of age, was assigned to Company "I", 330th Infantry Regiment, 83rd Infantry Division. On December 16th, 1944, his unit was engaged in battle with German forces near Strass, Germany, in the Hurtgen Forest. He was reported as missing in action and his body was not recovered. The American Graves Registration Command conducted investigations in the Hurtgen area from 1946 to 1950. They were unable to recover any remains, and he was declared unrecoverable in November 1951. While studying American losses in the Hurtgen area, a DPAA historian felt that a set of remains X-2752 was possibly Sweeneys'. The remains were disinterred in April 2019, and sent to DPAA lab in Nebraska. After using many methods, it was determined on June 14, 2021, that the remains are in fact Sgt, Bernard J Sweeney Jr.
