About the Mission: | The Patriot Guard Riders have once again been invited to participate in a dedication ceremony for the installation of a gravestone for a Civil War soldier. William Van Zandt was an Albany resident who entered the US Marine Corps in November of 1859 at the age of 34. He served honorably throughout the Civil War years. Promoted to Corporal in November of 1863, and Sergeant in October 1867, he was temporarily detailed aboard the USS Florida when he took ill. Sergeant Van Zandt died of cholera in October 1867 aboard the USS Potomac at Philadelphia, PA. Originally buried in Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Philadelphia, in the US Navy Yard, his remains were returned to his family in Albany in 1869, when he was re-interred in Albany Rural Cemetery, Section 26, Lot 51. Unfortunately, his headstone from Mt. Moriah Cemetery did not accompany Van Zandt’s remains, so in 2021 a new headstone was applied for and is installed at his grave site. This ceremony is to dedicate the new stone to the memory of an Albany resident who served his country faithfully in peace and in war. |
