About the Mission:

The family of John Henry Ortgies, Sr. has requested Patriot Guard Riders participation in his military honors funeral services. John, 65, passed away on August 28, 2024 at his residence.

Born in Schenectady, NY, John graduated from Mohonasen High School in 1977. He entered the US Navy in January of that year and served over 21 years, including time aboard the USS South Carolina (CGN-37), a California-class nuclear powered guided missile cruiser. He retired on 31 August 1999 at the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer (E-9). For his service, John was awarded the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (4 awards), Navy Expeditionary Medal, Navy Achievement Medal (2 awards), Navy Unit Commendation (2 awards), Coast Guard S.O.S. Ribbon, Joint Meritorious Unit, National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait), Navy Commendation Medal, Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist and Good Conduct Medal (5th award.
