About the Mission:

The family of Roy Isaac Overholt has requested Patriot Guard Riders participation in his military honors funeral services. Roy, 77, of Ward Lane Schoharie, NY passed away Friday, September 8th at the Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown after a very brief illness.

Born in Lawrence, MA, Roy graduated from Mesa High School in 1963 and attended college before enlisting in the US army in 1965. He served his country in the US Army as a Crew Chief in Helicopter Maintenance. He was a door gunner on Huey helicopters for the 1st US Calvary Aviation in Vietnam until his honorable discharge in 1968.

Roy later worked for Schoharie County Department of Public Works for 28 years where he was a Motor Equipment Operator until retiring. He also worked as a Professional Umpire for 10 years mostly for high school baseball. Following his retirement, Roy worked for Head Start driving bus and continued his volunteering with the Schoharie Fire Department where he was Past President and a life member, along with Scho-Wright Ambulance Service where he was an EMT and a past Captain.

He went on Leatherstocking Honor Flights as a guardian and was also a member of the Timothy Murphy VFW Post in Middleburgh, as well as past President of the Schoharie Little League.

Based on the most current COVID-19 Prevention Guidelines: Protect Yourself and Your Family from COVID-19, and CDC Guidelines of 3 March 2022, going forward, the Lead Ride Captain for any mission will be responsible for determining whether PGR members will have to mask up or not. Please ensure that you have a mask with you, should the need arise, and respect the LRC’s decision in these matters.


Special Information:

Staging at the funeral home with a flag line for the dignified transfer. Escort to the Old Stone Fort Cemetery, Fort Rd., Schoharie, to follow. Interment with military honors scheduled for 11:00 am.
