About the Mission:

The family of John Joseph O'Donnell III has requested Patriot Guard Riders participation in his military honors funeral services. John, 74, passed into eternal life October 4, 2023, in the comfort of his home with his loving wife and family by his side.

Born in Albany, John attended Albany City Schools. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps on 1 October 1968, was trained as a Rifleman (Specialty Code 0311), and completed a one-year tour of duty in Vietnam with the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force. He was released from active duty on 19 June 1970, and honorably discharged on 11 September 1974 at the rank of Corporal (E-4), after completing his inactive reserve obligation. For his service, John was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one Bronze Campaign Star, Vietnam Campaign Medal with '60 Device and a Marksmanship Badge - Rifle.

Since 1975, John was the owner and operator of O’Donnell Construction in Pittstown, assisting many local families with their roofing and masonry projects. He was a motorcycle enthusiast, a proud Marine, volunteered with both the Boy Scouts of America and the Rensselaer County 4H Club in support of his son, and as a young man, assisted the Boys Club of Albany as a summer camp counselor and lifeguard at Camp Scully on Snyder’s Lake.
