About the Mission:

The family of Saratoga National Cemetery Honor Guard Alan L. Ernst has requested Patriot Guard Riders participation in his military honors funeral services. Alan, 76, a lifelong resident of Schuylerville, passed away Sunday, July 23, 2023, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Saratoga Springs, NY, Alan served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.  Entering the service on 18 November 1968, he was trained as an Armor Reconnaisance Specialist (MOS 11D20).  His time included a 10 month tour of duty in Vietnam.  He was released from active duty on 17 November 1970, and honorably discharged from the inactive reserves on 17 November 1974 at the rank of Specialist 4th Class (E-4).  For his service, Alan was awarded a Combat Infantry Badge, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/3 Bronze Service Stars and a Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device.

One of Alan's most important ways of serving his fellow veterans was by doing it as a member of the Saratoga National Cemetery Honor Guard Association. He was also a member of the Greenwich Elks Lodge #2223, and Old Saratoga American Legion Post 278. He worked for over 30 years at the Saratoga County Clerk’s Office in Ballston Spa.

Based on the most current COVID-19 Prevention Guidelines: Protect Yourself and Your Family from COVID-19, and CDC Guidelines of 3 March 2022, going forward, the Lead Ride Captain for any mission will be responsible for determining whether PGR members will have to mask up or not. Please ensure that you have a mask with you, should the need arise, and respect the LRC’s decision in these matters.


Special Information:

We will stage a flag line for a dignified transfer, and then escort to Saratoga National Cemetery for an 11 am service.
