About the Mission:

The family of William "Bill" VanOoyen has asked Patriot Guard Riders to participate in honoring his service and life. Mr. VanOoyen passed away 7 March 2024 at the age of 98.

Mr. VanOoyen served in the US Army during WW II, attaining the rank of Technical Sergeant Third Grade (TSgt3, current equivalent is Staff Sergeant), with an MOS of 821, Quartermaster Supply Technician, NCO, and with the 524th Combat Engineers. Mr. VanOoyen served a total of two years, eleven months, from 1945-1948. Two Years, Five Months of that time were overseas in the European Theater of Operations. He was honorably discharged 15 September 1948.

Technical Sergeant VanOoyen earned: World War Two Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, w/ Germany clasp, Expert Qualification Badge (Carbine), Honorable Discharge Lapel Pin (Ruptured Duck).

Special Covid-19 Mission Guidelines:

Based on the most current COVID-19 Prevention Guidelines: Protect Yourself and Your Family from COVID-19, and CDC Guidelines of 3 March 2022, going forward, the Lead Ride Captain for any mission will be responsible for determining whether PGR members will have to mask up or not. Please ensure that you have a mask with you, should the need arise, and respect the LRC’s decision in these matters.


Special Information:

At approximately 9:15am, PGR members will form a flag line for the arrival of the family at the church (expected at 9:30am).  PGR members will hold the flag line through calling hours (expected to end at 11:00am) for the arrival of mourners.  Services are expected to begin at 11:00am.  Following services, PGR will escort the cortege to:  East Palmyra Cemetery, Whitbeck Rd., Newark, NY 14513.  Click here for map  At the cemetery, PGR Members will participate in military honors at graveside.

If you unable to attend the entire mission, please consider meeting us at the church at noon, or at the cemetery at approximately 12:15pm. If you go directly to the cemetery, please form a flag line at the gravesite for the arrival of the cortege.

Please be prepared with a clean US or Army flag. Dress for the weather, current forecast is for clouds and temperature in the low fifties. If you have large vehicle flags, please ensure they are securely attached for the approximately one mile escort.
