About the Mission:

The family of WWII Veteran and former Prisoner of War Robert E. Pope has requested Patriot Guard Riders participation in honoring his extraordinary life and service. Mr. Pope of East Amherst, NY passed away on 20 July 2023 at the age of 99.

Mr. Pope served our nation in the US Army Field Artillery during World War II from 1943-1945, with an Army MOS of 577-Intelligence Observer as well as Machine Gunner, serving in the European Theater from November 1944 to June 1945. He participated in the Rhineland and Ardennes Campaigns, and 5 days after the commencement of the Battle of the Bulge, his 590th Field Artillery Battalion was captured by German forces. He endured very difficult and challenging conditions as a POW until liberated in May 1945. Mr. Pope was honorably discharged from active duty on 5 December 1945 with the rank of Private First Class, and he earned the following awards: Army Good Conduct Medal; POW Medal; American Campaign Medal; European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal w/2 Campaign Stars; WW-II Victory Medal; and WW-II Honorable Discharge Button.

Special Covid-19 Mission Guidelines:

Based on the most current COVID-19 Prevention Guidelines: Protect Yourself and Your Family from COVID-19, and CDC Guidelines of 3 March 2022, going forward, the Lead Ride Captain for any mission will be responsible for determining whether PGR members will have to mask up or not. Please ensure that you have a mask with you, should the need arise, and respect the LRC’s decision in these matters.


Special Information:

PGR will stage with a respectful flag line in preparation for arrival of Mr. Pope, the funeral director and family, expected at approx. 9:15 AM. KSU at 9:35 AM for the escort to WNY National Cemetery for the 10:00 AM Committal Service and military honors.

Please be prepared with a clean 3x5 American flag, dress for the weather, and ensure your large flags are securely attached. Thank you for devoting your time to help honor an extraordinary WW-II Hero, Mr. Robert E. Pope, and to support his very proud and loving family.
