Memorial Mission

Rehoming Burial Flags
of 64 Unclaimed Veterans

All Military Branches
All Branches incl SpaceForce

Williston Park, NY - 08/13/2022

Mission applies to the following Region(s):

Region 8, Region 9

About the Mission:

The members of the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 32 are the guardians of 120 encased burial flags, as they are listed as the next of kin of record of these indigent veterans who have no known family.  These veterans are interred mostly at Calverton National Cemetery. Each encased flag has a brass plaque displaying the name and branch of service of the fallen.

These flags had been displayed at the VFW Post 4787 in Whitestone, Queens where Vietnam Veterans of America - Queens Chapter 32 met. VFW Post 4787 sold the building in early summer of 2021 and the VVA Chapter was forced to find a new meeting place. They now meet in the Kowalinski Polish Legion of American Veterans (PLAV) in Maspeth. Unfortunately there is no space at PLAV to display these flags.

We are rehoming 64 of these flags with the understanding that the new guardians will display these flags in an appropriate manner and place of honor.

Several people who committed to rehoming these burial flags are unable to attend the ceremony. This means that there will probably be some flags available, even if you haven't signed up.   If you have a place in your heart and your home, post, hall, firehouse or precinct, please come down and claim guardianship of one or more flags.

More ceremonies will be held in the future until all flags have been placed.
