About the Mission:

The friends and caregivers of US Navy WWII Veteran Dollena "Joy" Humes of Buffalo have requested Patriot Guard Riders participation in honoring her life and service. Ms. Humes passed away on 3 October 2022 at the age of 101.

Ms. Humes served our nation for 3 years on active duty in the U.S. Navy WAVES from 1943-1946. She was assigned to the Bureau of Personnel in Washington, DC, where she was a secretary and assistant to the Officer in Charge of the Officer Qualification Unit. Ms. Humes was honorably discharged from active duty on 1 February 1946 with the rank of Yeoman 1st Class (E-6), and she earned the World War II Victory Medal and WWII Honorable Discharge Pin.

Per the Amigone Funeral obituary, in 2016 at the age of 95, Joy became the first female Veteran to take the Buffalo Niagara Honor Flight from Buffalo to Washington, DC.
She also served as the Mayor of the Village of Aurora, NY for two terms.

Special Covid-19 Mission Guidelines:

Updated 8 March 2022

Based on the most current COVID-19 Prevention Guidelines: NYS Guidelines of 2 March 2022, and CDC Guidelines of 3 March 2022, going forward, the Lead Ride Captain for any mission will be responsible for determining whether PGR members will have to mask up or not. Please ensure that you have a mask with you, should the need arise, and respect the LRC’s decision in these matters.


Special Information:

PGR will stage in the Dollar Tree parking lot in preparation to proceed the very short distance to the home of WWII Veteran Dollena Joy Humes. KSU at Noon.
There is no immediate family involved in this tribute, but the dedicated caregivers and members of Buffalo Niagara Honor Flight will be the "family."
This should be a very short Mission, with presentation of the PGR plaque.
This will probably be the only military-related tribute to Ms. Humes, please do your best to participate.
