About the Mission:

The family of Cold War veteran Michael James Hakes has requested Patriot Guard Riders participation in honoring his life and service. Mr. Hakes of Tonawanda, NY passed away on 16 February 2024.

Mr. Hakes served our nation for 4 years on active duty in the US Marine Corps from 1980-1984, with a Marine Corps MOS of 0311-Rifleman. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Brigade, Fleet Marine Force, San Francisco, CA and he had a total of 16 months of sea service, including deployments to Okinawa. Mr. Hakes was honorably discharged on 27 November 1984 with the rank of Corporal (E-4), and he earned the following awards for his service: USMC Good Conduct Medal; Sea Service Deployment Ribbon w/2 Service Stars (3 Awards); Meritorious Mast; USMC Rifle Expert Badge; and Cold War Service Commemorative Medal.

Based on the most current COVID-19 Prevention Guidelines: Protect Yourself and Your Family from COVID-19, and CDC Guidelines of 3 March 2022, going forward, the Lead Ride Captain for any mission will be responsible for determining whether PGR members will have to mask up or not. Please ensure that you have a mask with you, should the need arise, and respect the LRC’s decision in these matters.


Special Information:

PGR will provide a respectful flag line for arrival of the family, and during the calling hours from 12:00-3:00 PM. The funeral service and Military Honors are scheduled for 3:00 PM. There is no escort or cemetery involved in this Mission.

Please be prepared with a clean 3x5 American or USMC flag, and dress for the weather. Please participate for any amount of time that your're able to. Thank you for devoting your time to help honor the Marine Corps service of Michael James Hakes, and to support his loving family.
