About the Mission:

The family of Deacon Rosario J. Tirella has requested Patriot Guard Rider participation in his military honors funeral services. Deacon Tirella, 88, passed away on Monday, Sept. 28, 2020.

Born in Manhattan, Deacon Rosario proudly served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He attained the rank of Master Sergeant in the Strategic Air Command aboard a B29 Bomber.  Among other awards, he earned the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal and the UN Service Medal.

He graduated from Stuyvesant High School and received his degrees from Pace University and St. Joseph's Seminary at Dunwoodie, New York. He was ordained a Deacon in 1975 and was in the third graduating class of permanent deacons from Dunwoodie. He proudly served Assumption Church, Holy Rosary Church and was the Catholic Chaplain at Staten Island University Hospital for 40 years.   He was one of the first clergy members to minister after the World Trade Center attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, and was selected to meet Pope John Paul II at Yankee Stadium.
