About the Mission: Technician Fifth Grade (T/5) William D. Costello faithfully and honorably executed his duties to our nation in World War II. He enlisted on 18 May 1943 and served as Guard Patrolman (522) until his honorable discharge on 9 January 1946.
He landed on Utah Beach with the 4th Infantry 20th Armored Division on the morning of the D-Day invasion of Normandy carrying an M1 Garand.
Battles and campaigns include Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France, and Rhineland.
For his service, he was awarded the D-Day Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Purple Heart from combat injuries suffered on 3 January 1945 in the European Theater.
He was a Marksman on the M1 Garand Rifle and the M1 Carbine, and an expert with the Thompson Submachine Gun Caliber .45.
After his honorable discharge from the US Army, he joined the US Navy, continuing to serve until his honorable discharge on 6 May 1949.
He was a life-member and past Commander (multiple) of VFW Post 4787, Whitestone, NY.
His family has requested PGR participation in his final honors; as we are likely to be the only honors he will receive, try to attend if you can.
