US Navy Korean War Veteran, NYPD Retired

Pearl River, NY - 10/07/2020

Mission applies to the following Region(s): Region 6, Region 7, Region 8
About the Mission:

The family has requested the Patriot Guard to participate in the funeral of Walter J. Merkle who passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 26, 2020. Walter proudly served in the US Navy during the Korean War. He served on the USS Strickland. Upon his honorable discharge, Walter worked for the NYPD for 24 years as a Police Officer and Detective. Following his distinguished career in law enforcement, he went to work for the Loews Hotel Group in NYC as the Director of Security, and later finishing his work career as a Security Supervisor for the Rudin Management Co. in NYC.

Walter enjoyed painting, gardening and fishing during his retirement years, and looked forward to vacationing in Montauk, NY or at the Jersey Shore during the summer. Walter also enjoyed following all major sports. He was St. Joseph Regional High School’s #1 football fan, by far. Walter was loved and respected by all he met, based on his kind spirit and willingness to help anyone in need. He was a true gentleman.
