About the Mission: Joseph D. Civitano served in World War II as Staff Sergeant under General George Patton for three years with the 11th Armored Division. He fought in the invasion of Normandy, the Hurtger Forest, and the Battle of the Bulge. He then went on to liberate the Mauthausen concentration camp, reportedly opening the gates.

In 2012 he was appointed a Chevalier of the French Legion of Honor and was awarded a medal for his courage in liberating France during World War II.  He served as Electric Fire Control Man 633, having been inducted on 23 June 1943 and was honorably discharged from Battery "C" 575th Anti-Aircraft Artillery (AW) Battalion on 2 April 1946. An Expert (M1 Carbine,) he received the American Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.

  • ** ADDITIONAL MANDATORY REQUIREMENT: Wearing a protective face covering of some kind is required...homemade face-mask, bandanna, etc. (Patriotic face coverings would be particularly appropriate) This will not only provide an extra layer of protection to ourselves and others, but will send the message that the PGR takes this crisis seriously and is performing this Mission responsibly.
Special Information: We will stand a flag line for a dignified transfer, followed by a short escort to the church.
