For the very first time in it's existence Saratoga National Cemetery will have flags placed on each of over 10,000 graves for Memorial Day weekend.
The Patriot Guard Riders have been requested to assist in the placing of these flags for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.
Where & When:
Saratoga National Cemetery - 200 Duell Rd, Schuylerville, NY
Saturday, May 28th
Stage near main flag pole for services that begin at 8:00am
Ceremonies kick off at 8:00am followed by the placement of flags on all 10,000 grave sites. PGR will be responsible for over 800 some graves in Section #8
This Flag Program is the result - not of VA or government involvement - but because dedicated individuals wanted this to happen and then made it happen.
First among these dedicated volunteers is Thomas DeMeo - Commandant of the Captain William Dale O'Brien Detachment of the Marine Corps League. He and other volunteers came together and formed the Saratoga National Cemetery Flag Project Committee. Right on up till two weeks ago this committee was operating under the commitment of the VA to supply the flags if volunteers would be responsible for this placement and collection. At the last minute the VA pulled the plug on providing the flags. Undeterred - members of the committee were able to quickly raise the over $5500 it took to purchase the flags and place an order with a flag company that was able to meet the delivery commitment for Memorial Day weekend. Great work by the committee.
PGR - we need 20 or so volunteers to be there on the 28th and assist in the punching of holes in the ground and the placement of flags. For those who can't be there on Saturday - we'll need volunteers either on Tuesday the 31st or Wednesday, June 1st to remove the flags from the grave sites.
Thanks again everyone for your help with this.
