|About the Mission:||The family of Alexander Bernard Smolinski has requested Patriot Guard Rider participation in his military honors funeral services. Al, 99, passed on Friday, November 6, 2020.
Al was a graduate of Albany High School and a veteran, serving in the United States Coast Guard during World War II from May 21, 1942 to December 5, 1945. Known as ‘Smokey’ to his friends in the service, he served on many ships including the USS Monomoy (AG-40), a commercial cargo ship acquired by the U.S. Navy during World War II, the USS Brunswick (PF-68), a United States Navy Tacoma-class frigate and the USS Centaurus (AKA-17), an Andromeda-class attack cargo ship. Al was honorably discharged at the rank of Machinist Mate Second Class, and for his service, was awarded the American Area Medal, WWII Victory Medal, European African Middle Eastern Area Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Area Medal.
Al maintained lifelong friendships with his shipmates, attending reunions until they ceased due to their advancing ages. He was a member of the American Legion Zaloga Post #1520, and the Albany Polish Community Center.
