About the Mission: The family of Sterling Amundsen Sturges, Jr. has requested Patriot Guard Rider participation in his military honors funeral services. Sterling, 89, passed on Saturday, June 20, 2020.

Born in Stamford, CT, Sterling served in the National Guard from 1947 to 1948, and on March 17, 1951, joined the United States Marine Corps. He was trained as a Proof Technician, Small Arms, and went on to become a Machine Gun Unit Leader (0335). Between October of 1951 and September of 1952 he participated in operations in South and Central Korea. During that period, he was wounded in action and was the recipient of a Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged on March 16, 1954 at the rank of Sergeant (E-5). For his service, he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal w/2 Bronze Stars and the United Nations Service Medal.

Sterling graduated from the University of Connecticut and worked in the dairy industry most of his life. He was a Mason (1958 Lodge 10, VT), an avid outdoors-man and a Lifetime Member of the Guan Ho Ha Fish and Game Club. Sterling shared his knowledge of nature with his children, scores of boy scouts, and many others.

  • No handshaking, fist-bumping, hugs, cheek kissing or any other physical contact.

  • * ADDITIONAL MANDATORY REQUIREMENT: Wearing a protective face covering of some kind is required...homemade facemask, bandanna, etc. (Patriotic face coverings would be particularly appropriate) This will not only provide an extra layer of protection to ourselves and others, but will send the message that the PGR takes this crisis seriously and is performing this Mission responsibly.
Special Information: Staging at the funeral home with a flag line for dignified transfer. Members will escort to Saratoga National Cemetery for interment with military honors. KSU approximately 09:30 AM.

Second Stage - Special Information: For those members staging directly to the cemetery, please form a flag line at the main gate for the arrival of the funeral cortege. Interment services are scheduled for 10:30 AM.

Special Note: With the implementation of Phase Four of the COVID-19 New York Reopening Plan, the number of attendees at outdoor funeral services at Saratoga National Cemetery has been increased to 50 individuals, with stipulations.  The Lead Ride Captain will make the determination for PGR member participation and placement upon staging.

It is the responsibility of any Ride Captain present to ensure that the mandatory rules for COVID-19 protection cited above are strictly adhered to at all times.
