Honor Mission

Joseph P. Armstrong, Veteran

USCG - WWII

MULTI-CITY, New York - 24 May 2017

ABOUT THE MISSION:

We have lost yet another member of our “Greatest Generation, and his family has requested Patriot Guard Riders presence at his military honors funeral services. Joseph P. Armstrong, 95 of Troy passed away on Thursday May 18, 2017. He was born in Albany and lived in Rensselaer and the Glass Lake area before moving to Troy over a year ago. Mr. Armstrong was employed as a sales representative for Albany Felt Co. now known as Albany International. He was a life member of the Troy Lodge of Elks BPOE # 141 and was a member of the American Legion Post #1489 in Wynantskill. Mr. Armstrong was a communicant of St. Henry’s Church in Averill Park. Joe participated in a Leatherstocking Honor Flight two years ago and was very much impressed with all that the Patriot Guard Riders did to support him and his fellow veterans that day.

Joseph was a United States Coast Guard veteran who had served aboard USS LCI-941, a Landing Craft, Infantry vessel during WWII. After completing basic training at Great Lakes, he was sent to New Orleans to ferry the small, flat-bottomed LCI-941 on a perilous journey through the Panama Canal and on to duty in the South Pacific. He participated in troop landings on Okinawa and Iwo Jima, and later assisted with clearing of mines in Tokyo Bay. Joseph earned the rank of Machinist Mate 3rd Class during his service and was Honorable discharged.
