|About the Mission:||The family of Francis Donald "Don" Burgess, Jr. has requested Patriot Guard Rider participation in his military honors funeral services. Don, 78, passed on Wednesday, November 25, 2020 in Deming, New Mexico.
Born in Troy, NY, Don was a 1961 graduate of Catholic Central High School. He was a talented painter and artist. Don enlisted in the US Navy Reserve in 1960, and was called to active duty in August of 1961. He served as a Commissaryman aboard the USS Newport News (CA-148), a Des Moines-class heavy cruiser, during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was honorably discharged in 1963 at the rank of Petty Officer 3rd Class (E-4).
After the military, Don served as a New York State Trooper from June of 1967 until his retirement. He was also a retired Health Inspector and, at one time owned a newspaper in Lake George, NY. He was an avid gun collector and loved his cats and reading. Don was also a cousin to PGRNY Region 5 Ride Captain, Bill Ryan.
