About the Mission: The family of Chief Warrant Officer Steven Skoda has requested the participation of the Patriot Guard Riders in his military honors funeral.

CW5 Skoda joined and US Army in 1985. Served two years in Alaska when he discharged in 1987. Shortly thereafter he joined the NY National Guard when he found out they would train him to be a helicopter pilot. Skoda was a 35-year veteran of the U.S. Army and New York Army National Guard. He deployed to Afghanistan twice in the past decade and was an experienced helicopter pilot flying Med-Evac helicopters to and from the battlefield. He was also a very accomplished instructor, having started flying UH-1 helicopters from Rochester’s Army Aviation Support Facility in 1992.

On January 22nd of this year while on a training mission with two other Chief Warrant Officers, the New York Army National Guard UH-60 medical evacuation helicopter, based at the Army Aviation Support Facility in Rochester, crashed killing all three.

The Patriot Guard Riders will be privileged to be there to render Honor, Dignity and Respect for the life, service and sacrifice of this hero - Chief Warrant Officer 5 Steven Skoda.

Special Covid-19 Mission Guidelines:

  • While in any outdoor setting, fully vaccinated PGR members will no longer be required to wear masks but are asked to act responsibly and respect your fellow members decision on this issue. For the protection of others, non-vaccinated members are asked to please wear a mask.
  • For the immediate future, all PGR members will continue to wear masks and social distance while indoors during a mission.
  • Masks will be worn at any other location where organizers, requestors or the Lead Ride Captain has determined that this be done.
  • Going forward, the Lead Ride Captain for any mission will be responsible for determining whether PGR members will have to mask up or not. Please respect the LRC’s decision on these matters.

Special Information: PGR will form flag line for dignified transfer at funeral home then escort CW5 Skoda to Saratoga National Cemetery.

Second Stage - Special Information:

Please note that below are the special instructions, received by the Moderators, at the cemetery for any Friday services.

NO Sentinels at front gate.

RIDERS: When arriving at the cemetery, riders will remain with the cortege and proceed with the procession to Shelter 1, parking fender-to-fender on the left hand side of the parking lot of the shelter parking lot only. You will be sharing the parking area with the family, so please park as tightly, but safely as possible.

CAGERS: Upon arrival at the cemetery, proceed past the procession and park on the right side of the roadway at or beyond Shelter 1. Once parked and the shelter area is clear of previous services, proceed to establish a flag line as normal.

Be aware that there is another funeral at 12:00pm ahead of CW5 Skoda interment.
