About the Mission:

The Patriot Guard Riders have been invited to participate in Congressman Chris Collins' presentation of Veteran of the Month honors to LTC (Ret) Laura Norwood of Pendleton, NY.

Following is LTC Laura Norwood's Bio:

I attended D’Youville College and graduated with a Bachelors in Nursing in 1975. I worked at Roswell Park Cancer Institute for 11 years, 1 year on a Medical Oncology unit and then for the remaining time in the Operating Room. As an Operating Room Nurse I was responsible for several of the surgical services, ensuring their equipment and supplies were maintained, I was also a nurse preceptor for new OR nurses. While at Roswell Park I entered the Army Reserves as a 1st Lieutenant on 11/6/80.

In 1987, I accepted a Nurse Administer position as Gowanda Psychiatric Center.  In November of 1990 my unit was called to active duty for Desert Shield/Desert Storm. At the time my son was just over 3 months old and my daughter just shy of 3 years old.

In April, I returned from active duty and returned to Gowanda Psychiatric Center.  I remained at Gowanda Psychiatric Center until NY State closed the facility in 1992. After the closure of Gowanda Hospital I took a position with the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, doing adjudication of Social Security Disability claims.

After Desert Storm I transferred to the AMEDD Augmentation Detachment, a program that placed certain specialty medical personnel with army units where they were needed.  In AMEDD, I did monthly drills in the Buffalo Veteran Administration Hospital Operating Room. I also did weeks of active duty as required with my unit and at various medical facilities throughout the country (Fort Bliss, Fort Carson, West Point). I retired from the USAR in 2005 with 23 years of creditable service.

I retired from New York State in 2009.  I then took a Registered Nurse per-diem position at Lakeshore Hospital (TLC Health) in the Behavioral Health Unit. Shortly after being there I was approached by the Nurse Administrator and asked to accept a full time position as the Nurse Manager. I was the Nurse Manager for the next 3 years. In April of 2013 I became the Associate Director of Transitional Services, Inc., an agency that provides residential and supportive housing services to the mentally ill and co-occurring disorder population. The agency is also contracted with Health Home Partners of WNY and Health Homes of Upstate NY to provide Medicaid Health Home Services to qualified individuals. On 2/11/19, I lobbied in Albany with the Association for Community Living for increased funding from NY State for residential housing of the mentally ill.

I am a former avid runner and completed 10 marathons, including NY and Boston. I placed 2nd and 3rd in my age group in several Buffalo Marathons. I mostly run after my almost 4 year old granddaughter now.
