In 1941, Carl E Hyde was a PFC in the Army stationed in the Philippines. When the Japanese started to overrun the base, he and others went into the jungle to hold them off. He was never heard from again and has been MIA since December 1941. His nephew, also Carl Hyde, US Navy veteran, started researching PFC Hyde. He was awarded the Purple heart and 3 other medals. His sister who is 93 now, said the family never got them. After over 3 years of communications with the Army they delivered them on October 17, 2019. The American Legion has asked to put on a ceremony to officially give them to her.
The Carl E. Hyde Post 963 of the American Legion will provide an Honor Guard and rifle volley.
Nephew Carl Hyde, who requested that Patriot Guard Riders of New York participate, is part of the Genesee County Honor Guard.
It took 78 years for the last of eight siblings, Elaine Flewellyn, 93, to get the medals.
