About the Mission: The Patriot Guard Riders have been requested to stand in Honor of the life and service of WW-II Hero Howard E. Tobin of Cheektowaga, who passed away on 21 July 2020 at the age of 96.

Born in 1923, Howard was the son of a German immigrant and one of nine children living in the Tobin home located off Genesee Street near the Buffalo-Cheektowaga border.  He was a student at Burgard High School before joining the United States Army on February 2, 1943. 

Howard was deployed from Fort Niagara, entering active service on February 9, 1943.  He was assigned to the 551st Anti-Aircraft Artillery which was part of the XX Corps (Twentieth Corps).  The XX Corps became part of Lieutenant General George S. Patton's Third Army. The Division participated in five battles during WWII including three of the four campaigns contributing to the liberation of France: the battles of Normandy, Ardennes and Northern France.  

Howard was a retiree of Union Carpenters Local 276.

  • * ADDITIONAL MANDATORY REQUIREMENT: Wearing a protective face covering of some kind is required...homemade facemask, bandanna, etc. (Patriotic face coverings would be particularly appropriate) This will not only provide an extra layer of protection to ourselves and others, but will send the message that the PGR takes this crisis seriously and is performing this Mission responsibly.
Special Information: Flag Line for arrival of family.  Prayer service at 9:15 AM, followed by dignified transfer and escort to Our Lady Help of Christians Church, 4125 Union Road, Cheektowaga.  Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM, followed by interment with military honors in Our Lady Help of Christians Cemetery.

Please arrive with a clean 3x5 American or US Army flag, and dress for the weather. Please be prepared to comply with all Erie County and PGRNY requirements for social distancing and face covering.
