About the Mission: Patriot Guard Riders NY has been requested to stand in honor of the life and service of Howard H. Bruce, Jr., who passed away on 10 March 2022.

Mr. Bruce served our nation for 4 years on active duty in the US Navy from 1951-1955, with a naval rating of Boiler Technician (BT.) Almost all of his active duty was served aboard the USS Purdy (DD-734), an Allen M. Sumner-class destroyer. During his sea service, the USS Purdy circumnavigated the globe 2 times, and provided fire support during the Korean War. Mr. Bruce was honorably discharged from active duty on 27 April 1955 with the rank of Petty Officer 3rd Class (E-4), and he earned the following awards: Navy China Service Medal; Navy Occupation Service Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Korean Service Medal w/2 Bronze Service Stars (3 Awards); United Nations Service Medal (Korea); and Korean Presidential Unit Citation Award.

Mr. Bruce - along with his wife - was a charter member of the Greater Niagara Chapter of the Wheatfield American Legion Riders Post 1451.

SPECIAL NOTE: Mr. Bruce is a cousin of our beloved "Vintage" Bill Blair, and they participated together on a Buffalo-Niagara Honor Flight to Washington, DC in 2016.

Special Covid-19 Mission Guidelines:

Based on the most current COVID-19 Prevention Guidelines: NYS Guidelines of 2 March 2022, and CDC Guidelines of 3 March 2022, going forward, the Lead Ride Captain for any mission will be responsible for determining whether PGR members will have to mask up or not. Please ensure that you have a mask with you, should the need arise, and respect the LRC’s decision in these matters.

Special Information: NOTE: The family has intentionally selected this Flag Day to honor Mr. Bruce, as it's his 91st birthday.

PGR will stand a respectful flag line for arrival of the family and guests. The Celebration of Life is scheduled to begin at 11:30 AM.  Following the service and dignified transfer, PGR will provide an escort to Elmlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, 3939 Delaware Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14217 for interment with Military Honors.
