About the Mission: The Patriot Guard Riders have been requested to stand in honor of the extraordinary military service of Ernest John Gainey, Jr. of Cheektowaga, who passed away on 29 June 2020.

Mr. Gainey served over 3 years of active duty in the U.S. Navy from 1964-1967, with a rating of Boiler Technician (BT). He served 34 months of sea service aboard the USS Comstock (LSD-19) during several campaigns of the Vietnam War. He was Honorably Discharged from active duty on 17 October 1967 with the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class (E-5) and earned the following: Navy Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal w/3 Bronze Service Stars; Vietnam Campaign Medal; ROV Gallantry Cross Medal; NYS Conspicuous Service Star Medal, NYS Medal for Merit.

Mr. Gainey, Jr. went on to serve as a highly-respected leader of the Sullivans Division of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps in Buffalo, including Commanding Officer for 10 years, attaining the rank of Lt. Commander. Mr. Gainey was also very involved in other military-related organizations, including the NYS Naval Militia and the U.S. Navy League. Mr. Gainey was also a past member of the Patriot Guard Riders.

  • No handshaking, fist-bumping, hugs, cheek kissing or any other physical contact.

  • * ADDITIONAL MANDATORY REQUIREMENT: Wearing a protective face covering of some kind is required...homemade facemask, bandanna, etc. (Patriotic face coverings would be particularly appropriate) This will not only provide an extra layer of protection to ourselves and others, but will send the message that the PGR takes this crisis seriously and is performing this Mission responsibly.
Special Information: Flag line for the arrival of family and friends.
Visitation from 9:30 to 11:00 AM.
Memorial Service at 11:00, with Military Honors.
There is no escort involved with this Mission, Mr. Gainey will be interred in the new National Cemetery in Pembrook at a later date.
Please arrive with a clean 3x5 American or US Navy flag, and dress for the weather.
Please abide by all current social distancing and face-covering requirements.
We have 5 Missions in Region-1 on Saturday.
