Honor Mission
Daniel J. Trzepacz
U.S. Navy - Korean War Veteran

Multi-City, NY - 07/28/2020

Mission applies to the following Region(s): Region 1, Region 2
About the Mission: The Patriot Guard Riders have been requested to stand in honor of the life and service of Daniel J. Trzepacz of Lake View, who passed away on 21 July 2020.

Mr. Trzepacz served our Nation in the US Navy for almost 4 years from 1950-1954, with a rating of Machinist's Mate. He served for over 38 months aboard the USS James C. Owens (DD-776), an Allen M. Sumner-class destroyer, performing blockade and interdiction patrols along the Korean coast.

While operating off Songjin on 7 May 1952, the destroyer engaged enemy shore batteries and silenced several of them, but sustained six direct hits. The following is from Mr. Trzepacz's great nephew: "Notably he shared with me on his Honor Flight last October that while being attacked off the coast of Korea his ship went to battle stations. While running across the deck an enemy shell landed at his feet. He proceeded to pick the shell up and throw it overboard. It exploded as he threw it and he suffered shrapnel injuries which remained in both his wrists until his death. He never sought any medical care outside of the corpsman on the ship or reported being injured when he returned to port as he felt he was just blessed to have survived when so many died."

Mr. Trzepacz was honorably discharged with the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class (E-5), and earned the following awards: National Defense Service Medal; Korean Service Medal w/1 Battle Star; Navy Occupation Medal; and United Nations Service Medal.
