Honor Mission
Alex J. Cichelli, VeteranUSN - WWII
Geneseo, New York - 18 Apr 2017
ABOUT THE MISSION:
We have been requested to stand in Honor of another decorated US Navy WWII Hero. Alex J. Cichelli of Retsof, NY passed away on April 10th at the age of 96. Mr. Cichelli enlisted in the US Navy in October 1942, and was one of the first enlistees to be processed through the Sampson Naval Training Center in Geneva. He served from 1942-1946, including extensive service aboard the USS Salt Lake City (CA-25) in the Pacific Theater. The USS Salt Lake City had the (unofficial) distinction of having taken part in more engagements than any other ship in the fleet, including naval support during the Battle of Iwo Jima. Mr. Cichelli was very proud of his part in keeping the ship's power plant functioning throughout these many campaigns by being in charge of the ship's machine shop, and at times he also provided fire control on the main deck. Mr. Cichelli was Honorably Discharged on 9 January 1946 with the rank of Chief Machinist's Mate (CMM) (Chief Petty Officer). For his WWII Naval Service to our Nation, CMM Cichelli was awarded: Navy Good Conduct Medal; Navy Unit Commendation Award; Navy Combat Action Ribbon; American Campaign Medal; Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal w/7 Campaign Stars; Philippine Liberation Ribbon w/Bronze Star; Philippine Presidential Unit Citation; WWII Victory Medal; Meritorious Mast. Mr. Cichelli was also a 70+ year American Legion Member in Retsof and Leicester.
