Escort Mission

5th Marine Vietnam Memorial Escort
USMC - Vietnam

On Thursday, March 22, 2018, a memorial dedicated to the 5th Marine Regiment will begin its cross-country journey from Barre, Vermont to Camp Pendleton, California. The memorial is dedicated to the 2,706 Marines and Sailors of the 1/5, 2/5, 3/5 and 2/4 battalions of the “Fighting Fifth” who lost their lives in Vietnam between 1966 and 1971. The components of the memorial will be transported on three flatbed tractor trailers, weighing in at over 100,000 pounds.

More information about, and the design of the memorial here can be found here:

The Patriot Guard Riders are honored to have been asked to escort this memorial across the country, through 12 states, a distance of approximately 3,279 miles. A Southern route has been chosen with the hopes of avoiding any weather issues.

The New York portion of the escort will have several components; PGRNY will meet members of PGRVT at the Vermont Welcome Center near Fair Haven, VT. At that point, PGRNY will take over the escort and lead approximately 220 miles to the Liberty-Great Bend Travel Plaza in Hallstead, PA. After a brief ceremony, the escort will be taken over by the Patriot Guard Riders of Pennsylvania who will escort to Greencastle, PA.

Over the next 6 days, Patriot Guard Riders will escort the memorial through Maryland, W. Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, arriving at Camp Pendleton, California where the dedication of the memorial will take place on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28, 2018.
