Memorial Mission

LCPL Peter J. Kaulback , KIA

USMC - Vietnam

Webster, New York - 05-31-18

ABOUT THE MISSION:

The Patriot Guard Riders have been invited to participate in a Memorial Service honoring LCPL Peter Jon Kaulback.  Born in Webster, NY on 22 December 1942, LCPL Kaulback enlisted in the US Marine Corps on May 10 1967 in Buffalo, NY. He arrived in Vietnam on December 18, where he was assigned to and served with Company B, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.  During the month of May, 1968 the 1st Battalion continued to maintain combat outposts on Hill's 881 South, 861, 950, and 558 surrounding the northern approaches to the Khe Sanh Combat Base and conducted daily patrols to seek and destroy the enemy.

On May 30, Company B, was placed under the operational control of the 2d Battalion, 3d Marines and on the following day with Company E became engaged against NVA forces in the vicinity of Route 9, 4 kilometers south, southeast of the Khe Sanh Combat Base. Heavy fighting lasted throughout the day and required artillery and fixed wing airstrikes to dislodge the enemy from their reinforced positions. The fire fights were costly.  Twenty-six men were killed in the action and many more were wounded.  One of the casualties was LCpl Kaulback, who was killed on May 31 at the age of 25.

Patriot Guard Riders will participate in a short procession down Ridge Road / Main Street, to Webster Rural Cemetery where a flag line will be established for a brief Memorial and Remembrance ceremony.
