Honor Mission

Richard J. Gibbons, Veteran
MULTI-CITY, New York - 30 Apr 2018

The Patriot Guard Riders have been invited to participate in the military honors funeral services of Mr. Richard J. Gibbons. Mr. Gibbons, 92, passed on January 31, 2018.

Richard attended Scotia schools and enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps in 1943. Accepted into the aviation cadet program, he was sent to flight school, and was graduated and classified in the P-40 fighter plane. He received a commission as a 2nd Lt. However, the need for bomber crews proved greater, and Richard was transferred to B-24s.  He was assigned as a ball turret gunner in the 4th Air Force based in March Field California. The task of the 4th Air Force was anti submarine missions from March Field to the Panama Canal. These crews faced extreme danger on their patrolling missions, because they always had to load a full bomb bay! At the end of the war in 1945, Richard volunteered and was accepted as part of the Flying Tiger in the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations, and was contracted as a P-51 pilot to aid the Chinese Nationalists in the fight against the Chinese Communists. As Richard made his way overseas, the Flying Tigers base was overrun by communist forces, stranding Richard on Okinawa.  Returning to civilian life in '45 he attended RPI and became a Mechanical Engineer with the Federal Government.
