Honor Mission

Stephen Dennis, Veteran
USN - WWII
Schuylerville, New York - 11 Apr 2018

ABOUT THE MISSION:

The family of Mr. Stephen Dennis has requested Patriot Guard Rider participation in his military honors funeral services. Mr. Dennis, 95, passed on Sunday, April 8, 2018.

Born in Riverside, Town of Stillwater, Stephen grew up in Frog Island’s Champlain Ave. A student of Mechanicville High School, he left school to join the US Navy weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served aboard the USS Atlanta CL-51, which was sunk during the battle for Guadalcanal on Nov. 13, 1942. He then served on PT boats and the USS Ancon AGC-4, an ocean liner that was converted to a combined headquarters and communications command ship.

On the morning of August 29, 1945, Ancon sailed into Tokyo Bay and assumed duties as a press release ship in coordination with battleship USS Iowa (BB-61). From the ship's anchorage between USS Missouri (BB-63) and USS South Dakota (BB-57), her crew witnessed the official Japanese surrender on 2 September. Stephen was the Radioman aboard ship, and was remembered as the the one who transmitted the message that the entire world had been waitng for - "Japan has surrendered. The war is over". For his service, Stephen earned 21 Navy Battle Stars and was honorably discharged at the rating of Radioman 3rd Class.

After the war, Stephen worked as an electrician for the former West Virginia Pulp and Paper Co, until the plant closed in 1971. Thereafter he worked at Adirondack Steel of 10 years, retiring in 1984. Stephen was a proud Navy veteran, and was nominated for and inducted in to the New York State Veterans Hall of Fame in 2015.

Portions of the above narrative are contained in Mr. Dennis' obituary, available for viewing online at the DeVito, Salvadore Funeral Home website at:  http://www.devito-salvadorefh.com/book-of-memories/3469601/Dennis-Stephen/obituary.php
