Honor Mission

John E. "Red" Parkinson, Veteran
USMC - Korea

MULTI-CITY, New York - 11 Apr 2018

ABOUT THE MISSION:

The family of Mr. John E. "Red" Parkinson has requested Patriot Guard Rider participation in his military honors funeral services. Mr. Parkinson, 89, passed on April 7, 2018.

Mr. Parkinson was the last surviving member of the Frozen Chosin Resevoir Weapons Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. "Red", as he was known by his immediate family and family of veterans, had received various acknowledgements throughout his life. Wounded in action in Korea in May of 1951, Red was on the cover of the August 6, 1951 edition of Newsweek magazine, "Korea, The Road Back". He was featured in an article in 2014 of the Eastwick Press, he was inducted into the Veterans Hall of Fame by NYS Senator Kathy Marchione and was interviewed recently as a local veteran hero by Benita Zahn of Channel 13.

Red survived the frozen ordeal of combat around the Chosin Reservoir during the closing days of November and opening days of December 1950. In the days that followed, the 3-7 conducted a fighting withdrawal South, through Toktong Pass and onward to Hagaru-Ri at the southern end of the reservoir. Wounded in action, Red made it through the subsequent withdrawal and the eventual evacuation of U.N. forces at Hungnam the following month. He survived the war and received an honorable discharge from the Marine Corps as a Staff Sergeant in 1952.

For his service, Red was awarded the Bronze Star w/Combat V, Purple Heart, Presidential Unit Citation w/1 star, Good Conduct Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal, Korean Service Medal w/5 stars and the United Nations Medal.

Portions of the above narrative are contained in Red's obituary, available for viewing online here:https://obittree.com/obituary/us/new...inson/3469368/

The Patriot Guard Riders are proud to have the opportunity to stand for and render dignity, honor and respect for the life and service of Mr. John E. "Red" Parkinson, proud United States Marine and Korean War Veteran. Semper Fi!
