The Patriot Guard Riders are proud to report that for the first time since the inception of the Wreaths Across America program, on December 16, 2017, a Holiday Wreath was placed on every gravesite at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY. The Patriot Guard Riders, along with several thousand community volunteers respectfully placed those wreaths, but much more importantly, took the time to honor and remember over 11,000 of our fallen soldiers, sailors and airmen resting in that place of honor.

We wish to sincerely thank everyone who made that goal a reality, particularly those who contributed via the PGRNY “Three For Two” program. Through that program, fully 100% of your contribution went toward the sponsorship of wreaths, with a total of almost 3,800 wreaths (over 1/3 of the total) provided….a truly outstanding effort.

Now that the bar has been set, we look forward to achieving that goal each and every year going forward, and we are confident that with your generous help and support, we can do just that. Once again, our heartfelt thanks for honoring and remembering our fallen heroes.

Anthony F. Schmitz
US Army, WWII Veteran

MULTI-CITY, New York - 01 Dec 2017


The family of Anthony F. Schmitz has requested Patriot Guard Rider participation in his military honors funeral services. Mr. Schmitz, 93, passed on Saturday, November 25, 2017.

A lifelong resident of Albany, Anthony was a graduate of Vincentian Institute High School. He entered the US Army on 12 March, 1943, and while assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 157th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, saw action in Naples-Foggia, Anzio, Rome, the Rhineland and Southern France. Anthony was Honorably discharged on 22 December 1945 at the rank of Private First Class. For his service, was awarded the US Army Good Conduct Medal, the Distinguished Unit Badge, European American Middle Eastern Service Medal w/Bronze Arrowhead, the WWII Victory Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge and the WWII Lapel Button.

After the War, Anthony attended and graduated from Siena College and went on to work at the US Postal Service and the Albany County Department of Social Services. Anthony had the honor of serving as the Grand Marshall of the 2012 Veterans Day Parade in Albany. Portions of this narrative were taken from the Lasak & Gigliotti Funeral Home Obituary.
