Dedication Mission

Frank A. Wilner Grave Rededication & Veterans' Day Celebration
USN, Spanish-American & WWI Veteran
Portage, New York - 11 Nov 2017

We have been requested to participate in a very special Veterans' Day event, Honoring a 44-year Veteran of the US Navy who served during the Spanish-American War and WWI. The grave of Navy Captain Frank A. Wilner was vandalized and has now been restored by volunteers. This Ceremony will not only rededicate the grave, but will celebrate and thank ALL Military Veterans who have served our Nation.
Frank Wilner was appointed to the rank of Midshipmen upon the recommendation of the Hon. W .H. Kelsey in 1869. He then graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1873. After graduation he was assigned to the USS Alaska, US Flagship Wabash, USS Congress, USS Hartford, USS Vandalia, USS Constellation, USC Schooner Silliman, USS Essex, US Flagship Philadelphia, USS Adams, USS Monadnook, USRS Wabash, USS Bancroft, USS Dixie, USRS Columbia, USS Topeka, and the USS Pennsylvania. Of these assignments the most notable was the crossing of the Pacific in the USS Monadnook, an ironclad much like the Monitor in the Civil War. Capt. Wilner was hand-selected to sail with Ulysses S. Grant on his world tour after his Presidency aboard the USS Vandalia.
Frank Wilner served with honor for nearly 44 years - including during the Spanish-American War and WWI - consistently raising through the ranks from Midshipman to Captain. He was very well known in the Nunda area, and his stories and service prior to WWI inspired others such as local KIA Hero Cecil Seager, whom the American Legion Post in Nunda is named in honor of.
